No, this isn't a blatant quote rip from Inigo Montoya in Princess Bride, but rather, a post to talk about how it's funny when things come full circle. Back in my youthful college days, I was an ardent supporter of all things Apple. I worked in the Micro Information Center as a Macintosh Expert and loved everything about my oh-so-superior Macintoshes. Then reality hit and I realized that I should probably start programming for a system where I could actually make a living.

Fast forward to today, and I realize I can have my cake and eat it, too. I am now the proud owner of a MacBook Pro. I imagine it will take a while to get up to speed and catch up on the advances made since Finder 6 was released on a Mac SE/30 :-), but that's alright because I will be dual booting this bad boy and using Paralells to have seamless integration between the 2 environments. That way I can stay productive and still have time to play and reacquainte myself with my long lost friend.

Stay tuned for more posts about my Macxperiences. I'll set up a new category for anything Mac related.

I've been less than thrilled with Parallels and recently downloaded the VMWare Fusion Beta. I'm not sure if in the end I'll like it better but it seems that some others, such as John Lam, are finding it better than Parallels.

Dude! That's so sweet! The MB definitely looks like a kickass machine. I'm going to be really curious as to how it performs with XP/Vista so get those posts up!

Hmm, or is this going to be a OSX only machine?

I know how you feel. I made the jump to a mac book pro about 6 months ago, for two reasons: a) see what all the fuss was about and b) learn something new.

I dual boot into either OS X or Windows XP, and as you mention, use the brilliant Parallels to run XP inside OS X. Really happy with the hardware, very slim and light, good battery life (noticably better running os X vs. bootcamp).

I must warn you though, OS X is very addictive. Although most of my clients use only windows, increasingly I can use OS X for day to day work, especially as the proportion of web development I do keeps increasing. Having a proper command line again is great, and somehow everything is both simplier and get more powerful. Having always used Windows, I'm finding it harder and harder to put up with it now I have used something different.

I still occasionally use XP for Visual Studio 2005 or Delphi 2006, and maybe the occasional game, but less and less. Parallels is quick enough most of the time not to need to reboot into windows.

I recommend getting hold of TextMate, DarwinPorts (links on http://blogs.conceptfirst.com/pages/Tools), and the amazing Quicksilver (http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/).

Have fun !

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'll keep a stream going to show how it progresses. It's quite amazing how quickly I brought back Unix and Mac tidbits from the past.

I already bought TextMate. A co-worker was demoing Rails in TextMate, and I was just blown away. I'll be sure to check the rest out soon. The more I play in OS X, the more I don't want to leave it. :-)
